A man was recently arrested after he robbed a store of some $200 with a "large" kitchen knife. I'm waiting to see how many years he gets in prison. Perhaps 3 to 5 years. That will cost the taxpayers about $200,000 to $400,000 given the current costs of incarcerating a single inmate. Given that crime is an economic activity and he's having trouble making ends meet, would it not be more reasonable to pay this individual $10,000 a year until he gets himself set up.
