The Wheel of Fortune
Excerpts from an article in the Metrowest Daily News
on December 15, 2002, by Michelle Hillman
The town's "Wheel of Fortune" gives many homeless enough food, shelter, medical care and money to live a life of drinking and crime, says Sgt. Michael Exposito of the Framingham Police.

Why would the homeless go elsewhere when all necessary services are provided within walking distance:

  • an emergency "wet" shelter for the homeless (SMOC),
  • a bottle redemption center (Bottle Bill),
  • a place to get a free meal (Salvation Army),
  • a health clinic (Metrowest Medical Center Southside Clinic), and
  • a temporary labor employment business (Labor Ready).
Ahhh! Life is good here.

John Kahn says that there is a need for people who will work for minimum wage, but this life style gives the town a bad rap.

The same people are arrested over and over.  This sounds like an urban version of "Andy Griffith".  It involves people who do not move on with their lives because of mental illness or the services are good enough to get by.

One of the homeless was arrested urinating outside the Registry of Motor Vehicles. This is a condonable offense.
