The story of Poor Nicolas Tuesday, January 4, 2005
Laura Medrano, Framingham Metrowest Daily News
This is regarding an article written by Nicolas Sanchez in 1998, a child that was sent to the good USA with thousands of other children, through operation "Pedro Pan."  Poor Nicolas was 16 years old and didn't speak a word of English, and he had to spend his first year in an orphanage (paid by the good, tax paying American citizens) with hundreds of other children.  Poor Nicolas.  He attended school and later on - thanks to the 1966 Cuban adjustment Act, adopted during the administration of President Lyndon Johnson, a Democrat -- he was able to get all kind of benefits including college scholarships and student loans.  Poor Nicolas.  He was then able to get his PhD and was given a job as a teacher at Holy Cross College.

But recently, he has written a very aggressive column (Dec. 19) in the MetroWest Daily News ranting about the unfairness of allowing other immigrant children to benefit from programs similar to those Poor Nicolas had received throughout his adolescence.  The column includes a direct hostile attack on "Poor Hector", a 19 year old Massachusetts resident and son of parents with no legal status.  Hector was brought to this country by his parents at age 12.  He has learned the language well, excelled in school -- finished near the top of his class.  Now, Hector desired to go to college and is one of many individuals in his position that could benefit from the in-state tuition.  But for some reason, Poor Nicolas wants to prevent "poor Hector" from getting what Poor Nicolas has taken advantage of his whole life.
