I wish to respond to a letter written by Mr. Frank X. Kavanaugh under the
heading Don't Be Fooled. I urge the MWDN readership to reject Mr. K's
implied message out of hand.
According to this Frank K. character, it's the town, by which he presumably means the Board of Selectmen, who out of the kindness of their hearts somehow permit CCFIILE and the Rizolis to air their program. Gee, that's funny; all my life I've had it dead wrong! I was under the impression that the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION was the instrument that recognized and protected the RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH for everyone, the Rizolis included. But now we have the inestimable Mr. K. to set us straight about such things. Free speech is merely a privilege, the granting of which the town can revoke at its mere whim. He suggests that the BOS should waste no time in doing so in the case of the Rizoli brothers. Surely, we citizens who desire civil discourse should band together with Mr. K. to demand that ALL speech that we find unsavory or ill-mannered be immediately removed from our airwaves, cable networks, printed publications, and the Internet. By censoring discussions of such indelicate topics we can comfortably pretend that the problems to which they pertain do not exist. The First Amendment protection must be withheld from illiterate sorts with whom Mr. K. differs, and reserved exclusively for him and his elitist friends. These far-thinking visionaries will provide a Utopian society for which all of us illiterates will be eternally grateful! They shall save us from our sins and ignorance! |
