First actual record of the area was a land grant to Elizabeth Glover in 1640.  Many grants followed in rapid succession but the largest and most important was the Thomas Danforth grant because it is upon the the Danforth farms that the main part of Framingham was built. The town was named by Thomas Danforth after Framlingham, England.  Why the "l" was dropped is lost in obscurity. Incorporated on August 5, 1700 wth only 350 residents. The railroad reached Framingham in 1830. 25.65 square miles 8 elementary schools 3 middle schools 1 charter school 1 high school (two campuses) 1 vocational school 270 miles of public way. 150 miles of sidewalk. 230 miles of storm drain conduit. 12,000 catch basins and drain manholes. 10,000+ public shade trees. In 2003, there were about 67,500 residents. 135 cases of AIDs (185.3/100,000 population) on 01/01/2003 $967,724, amount of Chapter 90 funds in 2003 ($1,308,569 unexpended) State aid in 2003: Chapter 70 [ $12,392,654 ], Lottery aid [ $3,903,611 ] and Payment in Lieu of Taxes [ $5,108,043 ]
